What it is

An organic sulfur compound found in small amounts in food. Sold mostly for joint pain and exercise recovery.

Why people take it

Several small randomized trials show MSM reduces knee osteoarthritis pain a bit more than placebo, at 3 to 6 grams per dag. The trials are small and short, so confidence is limited, but the direction is consistent.

Our verdict

Modest but consistent for joint discomfort. Doses under 3 g/day are below what the trials used.

Structure & class

Dimethyl sulfone, oxidation product of DMSO. Proposed mechanism: sulfur donation and NF-κB/IL-6 modulation.

Mechanism & clinical data

Kim et al. 2006 (Osteoarthritis Cartilage) RCT (n=50) found 3 g twice daily reduced WOMAC pain vs placebo over 12 weeks. NotaKoshi et al. 2023 RCT confirmed improvement in knee-related quality of life in healthy participants with mild symptoms. Trials are small, industry funding is common, and long-term data is absent.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorbed within hours; steady-state reached in days.

What to watch out for

Many combination produkter underdose MSM at 500-1000 mg — well below trial doses. Purity testing matters; cheap MSM is a commodity chemical.

Where this dose comes from

The trial dose above is our editorial pick from the published human trials for this ingredient. We choose the dose that the best-available studies used on the endpoint most relevant to longevity. The range shows the lowest and highest doses tested in published trials. The landmark studies below are the papers we read to set it. You can click through and check our work.

When new trials publish, our automated sweeps flag them. If a new study materially changes the dose, we update it through editorial review and record the old dose, new dose, and the triggering study in every affected product's recommendation history. The dose is never changed automatically.
