Best-supported claim

Taurine's best-supported human effects are on cardiometabolic markers and heart failure symptoms. A 2025 metaanalys of 34 RCTs found taurine significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, and total cholesterol, with the strongest glucose and lipid effects at 1.5-3.0 g/day for 8 or more weeks (https://academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/advance-article/doi/10.1093/nutrit/nuaf220/8340615). A separate 2024 metaanalys of 20 RCTs and 808 participants found taurine reduced heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and NYHA heart failure functional class, while increasing left ventricular ejection fraction, with the largest benefits in heart failure patients specifically (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11325608/). For exercise, a metaanalys found oral taurine produced a small but real improvement in endurance performance (Hedges' g=0.40) regardless of whether it was taken as a single 1 g dose or 6 g/day for 2 weeks.

Not supported by the evidence base

Taurine was propelled into the longevity supplement conversation by a 2023 Science paper (Singh et al.) reporting taurine declines with age across species and that supplementation extended mouse lifespan by 10-12%, with only correlational human data. A rigorous 2025 follow-up in the same journal, using longitudinal data from three distinct human cohorts plus nonhuman primates and mice, directly contradicted the premise: circulating taurine increased or stayed unchanged with age in healthy individuals, and there was no clear association between taurine levels and health status (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adl2116). The 2025 paper concluded that individual variability in taurine levels is generally larger than any change across the lifespan, meaning taurine is unlikely to be a useful aging biomarker, let alone a proven anti-aging intervention in humans. No completed human RCT has tested whether taurine supplementation extends lifespan or slows biological aging; a German trial (TauAge) testing 4 g/day for 6 months on biological age markers was still recruiting as of its registration.
