Effects of Omega-3 Supplementation in Sarcopenia After Bariatric Surgery: A Triple-Blind Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

Muscle mass fell significantly in both groups between baseline and day 105, by 3.1±0.3 kg in one group and 2.2±0.5 kg in the other. The abstract concludes that omega-3 did not prevent muscle loss or improve strength or functional performance during this early postoperative period. It was safe and well tolerated. This is a useful negative result in a clinically specific setting. It does not test normal aging-related sarcopenia, and bioelectrical impedance is a body-composition measurement rather than a direct clinical outcome. The short perioperative window also leaves longer-term effects unanswered.
