Researchers from Technische Universität Braunschweig and the University of São Paulo reviewed taurine's molecular functions and supplementation outcomes in metabolism, inflammation, and aging. Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in many tissues and functions as a non-proteinogenic beta-amino acid. The review describes taurine's roles in antioxidant defense, anti-inflammatory signaling, calcium homeostasis, and mitochondrial function. Supplementation showed promising outcomes in human studies, particularly in precision nutrition and prevention of metabolic and age-related diseases.
