What it is

Compression therapy applies external pressure to limbs to improve venous blood return, reduce swelling, and support lymphatic drainage. Two main forms exist: static compression (elastic garments like socks and sleeves) and pneumatic compression (inflatable boots or sleeves that sequentially compress the limb).

Evidence

For medical indications, the evidence is strong and long-standing. Compression therapy is standard of care for deep vein thrombosis prevention in hospitalized patients, lymphedema management, and chronic venous insufficiency. For athletic recovery, pneumatic compression devices (NormaTec, Therabody RecoveryAir) have moderate evidence for reducing delayed-onset muscle soreness and improving subjective recovery. No trials have examined longevity, mortality, or aging biomarkers.

Practical considerations

Static compression garments are inexpensive ($20-100) and can be worn daily. Pneumatic compression boots cost $400-1,500 and are used 15-30 minutes per session. For vascular health maintenance, graduated compression socks at 15-20 mmHg are a low-cost, low-risk option with established medical benefits for venous return. The longevity connection is indirect: better venous return, reduced edema, and improved circulation may support vascular health over time, but this has not been tested in longevity trials.
