What it is

Grounding, or earthing, involves direct skin contact with the surface of the earth (barefoot on grass, sand, or soil) or the use of conductive indoor devices (mats, sheets, patches) connected to a grounded electrical outlet or ground rod. The premise is that the earth's surface carries a negative charge, and direct contact allows electron transfer that neutralizes free radicals and reduces inflammation.

Evidence

The evidence base is small. Published studies (many from a single research group) report reductions in inflammation markers, improved sleep quality, faster muscle recovery, and reduced pain. However, these studies are typically small (10-40 participants), short-duration (hours to days), and some lack blinding or proper controls. Independent replication by separate research groups is limited. No large RCTs exist, and no study has examined longevity, mortality, or aging biomarkers.

What to know

Grounding sits in the category of plausible-but-unproven therapies. The theoretical mechanism (electron transfer reducing oxidative stress) has some physics basis, but whether meaningful biological effects occur in humans through grounding remains debated. The risk is low, and the intervention is inexpensive. Walking barefoot on natural surfaces also provides other benefits (stress reduction, nature exposure, foot strength) that are independent of any electron transfer mechanism.

Practical considerations

Grounding mats cost $50-200, grounding sheets $80-300. The simplest approach, walking barefoot on grass or sand for 20-30 minutes, is free. Indoor grounding devices should be properly installed and tested for electrical safety. Avoid use during thunderstorms due to lightning risk.
