Infrared Sauna Therapy
Lower-temperature sauna using infrared radiation to heat the body directly, combining mild heat stress with photobiomodulation for cardiovascular and mitochondrial benefits.
What it is
Infrared saunas use infrared radiation to heat the body directly rather than warming the surrounding air. Three wavelength bands are typically used: near-infrared (NIR, 0.75-1.5 micrometers), mid-infrared (MIR, 1.5-5.6 micrometers), and far-infrared (FIR, 5.6-1000 micrometers). Some systems add visible red light for photobiomodulation. Operating temperatures range from 120 to 140F (49-60C), notably lower than traditional Finnish saunas at 150-195F (66-91C).
How it works
Two mechanisms are proposed. First, mild heat stress activates heat shock proteins (HSPs), which act as molecular chaperones maintaining protein structure and supporting cellular stress resistance. A single far-infrared session increased circulating HSP70 in controlled studies. Second, near-infrared and red light wavelengths may stimulate cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria, potentially increasing ATP production and triggering downstream repair signals. This photobiomodulation effect is wavelength- and dose-dependent.
Evidence
The evidence base is moderate but mostly mechanistic. Controlled studies show HSP72 increases of approximately 49% after passive heat exposure. Clinical reviews describe vascular and endothelial improvements as the most repeatable benefits. However, no large randomized trials with hard clinical endpoints (mortality, cardiovascular events) exist specifically for infrared sauna. The mortality benefit data comes from traditional Finnish sauna studies, which may not directly transfer.
What to know
Traditional Finnish sauna has stronger epidemiological data, including the Finnish Kuopio study showing lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality with frequent use (4-7 sessions per week). Infrared sauna operates at lower temperatures, which may improve tolerability and enable more consistent use, but the same mortality evidence does not yet exist for infrared. The photobiomodulation component from red and near-infrared light is a theoretical advantage over traditional sauna, but clinical evidence for this specific benefit in sauna form remains limited.
Practical considerations
Home infrared sauna units cost $1,000-6,000. Commercial sessions at spas and wellness clinics typically cost $30-60. Sessions last 5-20 minutes. Hydration before, during, and after is essential. Consistent, repeated use (2-4 times per week) is emphasized over single sessions. Stop immediately if dizziness, nausea, chest discomfort, or unusual shortness of breath occurs. Consult a physician before starting if you have cardiovascular disease, autonomic dysfunction, impaired temperature regulation, or take medications affecting thermoregulation.
