Red Light Therapy
Photobiomodulation (Red and Near-Infrared Light Therapy)
Non-thermal light exposure using specific red (600-700nm) and near-infrared (700-1000nm) wavelengths to stimulate mitochondrial function and reduce inflammation.
What it is
Red light therapy, or photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of red (630-700nm) and near-infrared (700-1000nm) light to stimulate cellular processes. Unlike infrared sauna, PBM is primarily non-thermal, working through cellular photoreceptors rather than heat stress.
How it works
The primary mechanism is absorption of red and near-infrared photons by cytochrome c oxidase (CCO), the final enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. This absorption is proposed to increase ATP production, reduce reactive oxygen species at therapeutic doses, and trigger downstream signaling pathways involved in repair, inflammation reduction, and cellular resilience. Effects are highly wavelength-, dose-, and tissue-dependent.
Evidence
Clinical evidence is strongest for wound healing, skin rejuvenation, and pain management. Multiple RCTs support these indications. The mechanistic evidence for mitochondrial benefits is well-established in laboratory studies. However, systemic anti-aging claims, including epigenetic age reduction or lifespan extension, lack large RCTs with hard endpoints. Most longevity-related claims are extrapolated from mechanistic data.
What to know
Dosing matters enormously. Too little light produces no effect. Too much can theoretically cause oxidative stress rather than benefit. The biphasic dose-response curve (hormesis) means more is not always better. Key parameters include wavelength (commonly 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared), irradiance at the skin (10-200 mW/cm2), duration (5-15 minutes), and distance from the light source. Consistency (3-5 sessions per week) matters more than single long sessions.
Practical considerations
Home LED panels cost $100-2,000 depending on size and power. Clinical sessions available at dermatology clinics and wellness centers. Eye protection is essential when using near-infrared panels. Results for skin typically appear after 4-8 weeks of consistent use. Systemic benefits beyond skin and local pain are not well-established.
