What it is

Whole body vibration (WBV) involves standing, sitting, or exercising on a vibrating platform. The vibrations trigger rapid muscle contractions and provide mechanical loading to bones. Two main platform types exist: vertical (whole platform moves up and down) and oscillating (see-saw motion, one side up while other down).

Evidence

The strongest evidence is for bone density improvement in postmenopausal women and older adults. Multiple RCTs and meta-analyses support this application. Balance and fall prevention evidence is moderate, with clinical relevance for elderly populations. Mixed evidence exists for muscle strength gains, with some studies showing benefit and others showing no advantage over traditional exercise. No trials have examined longevity, mortality, or aging biomarkers.

Practical considerations

Consumer vibration plates cost $100-1,500. Typical protocols use 10-15 minute sessions, 3-5 times per week, at frequencies of 15-35 Hz. Exercises can include standing, squatting, or performing dynamic movements on the platform. WBV should complement, not replace, traditional resistance training and weight-bearing exercise. The bone density benefits are most relevant for populations at risk of osteoporosis.
