Zone 2 training refers to sustained aerobic exercise performed at a low intensity that keeps blood lactate near or below roughly 2 mmol/L, the approximate threshold at which lactate clearance and production remain balanced. In practice this is a pace at which conversation is comfortable but sustained effort is required, often corresponding to roughly 60-70% of maximum heart rate, though individual thresholds vary and lactate measurement is the precise guide.

The longevity interest in Zone 2 comes from its effect on mitochondrial biology. Mitochondrial density and oxidative capacity decline with age, and this decline is implicated in metabolic disease, frailty, and reduced exercise tolerance. Zone 2 work is specifically targeted at improving mitochondrial oxidative function in slow-twitch (type I) muscle fibers: endurance training at this intensity increases mitochondrial biogenesis and the muscle's capacity to oxidize fat, which in turn improves metabolic flexibility, the ability to switch between fat and carbohydrate fuel use.

The evidence base is strong for the general physiological adaptations (improved aerobic capacity, mitochondrial enzyme activity, insulin sensitivity) and consistent with the broader exercise literature showing that cardiorespiratory fitness is among the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality. Specific Zone 2 protocols have become popular in performance and longevity circles, but the mortality evidence attaches to cardiorespiratory fitness and total moderate-intensity activity broadly rather than to Zone 2 as a uniquely superior intensity zone. Higher-intensity training and resistance training remain necessary complements; Zone 2 is not a replacement for either.

The principal practical advantage of Zone 2 is sustainability: low intensity allows large training volume with comparatively low injury risk and limited fatigue, which is why endurance athletes accumulate so much of it. For non-athletes, it is an accessible entry point to cardiovascular training.
