What to Look for in a Sauna

Bryan Johnson

N=1 SELF-EXPERIMENT / PROTOCOL REPORT WITH BIOMARKER TRACKING Tier 4 2026

NEW SAUNA PROTOCOL / BIOMARKER UPDATE: Johnson reports 15 dry-sauna sessions, lower toxin readings, a claimed 10-year vascular-function age reduction, and tests longer sessions with groin and face cooling; this remains an N=1 report.

On 28 August 2026, Bryan Johnson published a sauna protocol and product guide. He says the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires left him in the 99th percentile for toxin exposure, then reports that 15 dry-sauna sessions brought toxin levels below baseline. He also claims a 10-year reduction in vascular-function age and all-time-high fertility markers when he used groin ice. The post does not give baseline values, assay names, control periods, confidence intervals, or a comparison with another sauna type. His current routine is a dry Finnish-style sauna at 200°F (93°C) for 20 minutes daily, after exercise, with an ice pack over the groin, a wool hat, moisturizer, and 36 oz of mineral water. He is experimenting with longer sessions and cooling the face and neck. For beginners he suggests 15–20 minutes, 3–5 times weekly, starting near 176°F (80°C). The article cites long-term Finnish observational evidence for sauna use but supplies no new randomized trial. It also promotes the Plunge Sauna and discloses partner compensation. This is a self-report with product guidance, not proof that sauna caused the biomarker changes. Co-interventions, regression to the mean, assay variability, and selective reporting remain possible.

Whether you shop this with us or elsewhere, build your sauna protocol with the temperature range the evidence is built on (~176-212°F)... and make sure it's dry sauna.
Critic notes

No critic or newly indexed PubMed/preprint item dated 27 August–2 September 2026 supplied a human RCT or meta-analysis that tests this sauna protocol. The post relies on older observational sauna evidence and Johnson’s own biomarker report. No ingredient evidence-grade upgrade follows.
