The Identification of a SIRT6 Activator from Brown Algae Fucus distichus
The foundational 2017 paper from NIH's National Institute on Aging that first identified fucoidan from brown seaweed as an activator of the SIRT6 enzyme, the basis for DoNotAge's SIRT6 Activator product.
This is the original identification study behind the fucoidan-SIRT6 story. Researchers at the National Institute on Aging (part of NIH), working with the University of Eastern Finland and Ireland's Teagasc Food Research Centre, screened bioactive compounds from brown seaweed, including polyphenols, polysaccharides, and fucosterol, for activity against SIRT6, a deacylase enzyme tied to DNA repair and lifespan regulation in mice. The paper reports that fucoidan extracted from Fucus distichus activates SIRT6 deacetylase activity in vitro. This is a cell-free or cell-based biochemical screening study, not an animal or human trial. It establishes mechanism and plausibility, not clinical or even in-vivo efficacy. Every downstream claim about fucoidan as a 'SIRT6 activator' supplement traces back to this 2017 paper and its follow-on work. The 2025-2026 mouse lifespan study (Suh et al., bioRxiv preprint) is the direct successor that moved this finding from in-vitro screening to live aged mice.
